Just finished up a extremely HOT AR at Caesar Creek at Race-COAR summer games III. We cleared the course with 6 minutes left. Also got a touch of heat exhaustion and dehydration. We're good now and ready to put out 25 CP's for The Green Corn Moon.

This looks to be a fun event from NEOOC,
Navigate through a tangle of steep gullies and beautiful terrain at the RE-ENTRANT RAMPAGE mini-ROGAINE (Adventure Race) at the Brecksville Reservation. Sponsored by the NorthEastern Ohio Orienteering Club, September 12th. The Rampage is a six hour event, and there will be a three hour option, as well as a concurrent regular Orienteering meet (Beginner’s event on trail about 2-3k, 1.5hr score-orienteering course).

The Brecksville Reservation covers over 2,500 acres of the Cleveland Metroparks and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Map is a 1:15,000 ISOM orienteering map. Fifty control points will be placed throughout the park (Score-Orienteering format), requiring repeated climbs of up to 200ft; we doubt you will be able to clear this very physical course in 6hr.

Start will be at the Meadows Picnic area.

Please pre- Register by emailing Randy Mitchell (rjm2_at_uakron_dot_edu) before September 7 if you’d like a pre-marked map. Walk-up registration available, but you’ll probably have to mark your own map by hand..

Sheltowee Extreme

We finished the Sheltowee Extreme in second place in our division. Waiting to see overall, think its pretty good since many teams DNF. This was a great experience for us. It was cool to meet new racers and help old friends. Kathy Jo-It was neat to hang with you for several miles, sorry to lead you wrong!! Trakkers- It was really inspiring to leapfrog one of the best USARA teams on the planet. You guys rock!! Thanks!! Brian-It was great to have you along, you helped keep us going, great attitude!! C-bugs- You guys are so relaxed and fun...Race-COAR- what can i say, it is great to have a friendly, competitive team to inspire us to come out of retirement.

Howdy from KC, MO. I'm in Kansas City and Chuck gets to pick up all those fun checkpoints at Lake Hope.

As I squeeze in time, the results and pics are being put together remotely between us both. The wifi is really slow at the hotel so be patient, I have about 100 pics to load.

We hope everyone had a great time, we did setting this course and serving all you, you guys are the best!!! It is really fun and nerve wrenching watching the race progress. We strive to have a fun, challenging course that meets a wide range of skill level. The results are really impressive, this was the best finish yet. NO quiters!!

We will be leaving for Lake Hope, Friday am, we will not have any communication. Ask questions tonight, if you have any.

The course is BIG, we removed the 2 trail runs considering the weather and possible wet conditions. Scroll down to see corrected course. We do not expect anyone to clear the course, time management will be crucial to a successful race. The AR racers need to punch at least 2 CP's per discipline to be ranked. The ROGAINEr's are running freestyle, just get as many as you can. The penalty for being late for this race has changed to -10 points per minute late. AR checkpoints are worth 10 points each, ROGAINE CP's are worth first digit X 10 as normal. Everyone has the same map. The CP's on the trails will not have a typical orange/white control, they will have surveyors tape to help prevent theft. The lake/paddle CP's will be on land or swamp and will require a racer to get out of the boat to punch.

Please download, print and sign a waiver then bring it to check in!! Campers can check in at the campsite Friday night. Maps will be handed out at 7:30am. Don't forget the start/finish is at the shelter by the lake.

Plan on wet feet!! NO Todd, Goretex will not stop this swamp water!!

We have made some changes in the course. The weather should be dry and HOT!! Hydrate or die!!!
Race of Hope 2010 course description.
1.start at shelter
2. “O” Course, 3 CP’s, get in any order, must punch at least 2 (CP’s 10, 20, 30)
4. transition at shelter to paddle, 5 cp's, must punch at least 2 before transition (CP’s 12, 22, 32, 42, 52)
2. transition at shelter, 1st bike leg, 5 cp's on trails, must punch at least 2 before transition (CP’s 11, 21, 31, 41, 51)
6. transition at group camp (CP #51), UTM course, plot 3 cp's, must punch 2 before transition, (CP’s 13, 23, 33)
7. transition at group camp to bike 2nd leg, must punch at least 2 cp's before transition (CP’s 14, 24, 34, 44, 54)
8. transition at Hope Furnace (cp#34), ROGAINE, 5 cp's, must punch 2 before transition (CP’s 15, 25, 35, 45, 55)
9. transition at Hope Furnace to bike, road sprint to finish. (no CP’s)
Bike CP's are near the trail and only have ribbons, no orange and white control marker.
Boat CP's, one person will get out of boat to punch CP, they are on land.

Yep Hot, Humid and rain again....3 years in a row...The forecast is getting better for the weekend as we get closer. The race will go on!!!

We have 19 AR teams and 11 ROGAINE teams right now. If you are camping, scroll down in the blog and fill out the camping form.

Reminder; each team should have a UTM tool for a 1/24,000 map scale, we have a couple to loan. Other mandatory gear; compass, whistle, hydration (water will be available at the 3 transition areas), Adventure Racers do not forget your bike, helmet, boat, paddles, PFD's.

We are setting the course tommorrow and will post updated course description soon. Plan on getting your feet wet on foot nav and carrying hiking shoes while on the bike.

We will be accepting donations for the Friends of Lake Hope and The American Cancer Society. All money donated along with a portion of proceeds are split between the two charities.

Ok for anyone who is on the fence, you are running out of time to register for the Race of Hope. We will be closing registration Monday June 14 at midnight. In the past we have turned good racers away who have missed the deadlines for our races.
This is the only adventure race that we will put on this year and we have planned a good one. As a racer you will have options as to how easy or hard you want it to be.
If you are into rogaines well there is good news for you, we are also doing a rogaine at the same time!! You can race the same course as the adventure racers and trust us it is also a great rogaine course.
Remember if you dont want to get up early the morning of the race or are to tired to head home afterwards we are offering free camping at the group camp just bring your tent and sleeping gear.

The Southern Michigan Adventure Club will be hosting the�tenth annual Sprint
Adventure in Southeast Michigan. The unique race format makes it suitable
for the first time racers as well as the seasoned competitor. It will bring
together the best aspects of the sport including several surprises to keep
it fun interesting and challenging.

If you've never done a SMAC race before come and see what makes our annual
event so special and remember to expect the unexpected! As is tradition
there will be plenty of adventure with a dawn to late afternoon time
format�male-female-coed team prizes and post race food and�fun. Race results
provided immediately post-race.

This year's race venue will includes all of southern Michigan's principal
forest types, including wet lands and hardwood forest. This area includes
glacial topography that is unique to SE Michigan. The orienteering quality
OCAD produced race maps include all major trails and land features.
Navigation instruction will be offered on Friday evening before the race
briefing.

To keep the quality high and to minimize the impact to the environment we

Wow what a winter! I wonder how many people hope for a "old fashion winter" again for a while? We finally got the rest of the controls out of Tar Hollow today "Cabin Fever was on Feb 6" it has never took us that long to remove a course. We were out there on March 10 and there was still 8" of snow on the ground and the forest roads hadn't been touched.
Speaking of its about time, NSF took part in COARs Lepregaine last Saturday and finished a respectable 7th place "thats the first time just the two of us has raced together since the Ambush days" So now spring is here and hopefully everyone is out running and riding and getting back in racing shape. Chuck has knocked off 17 lbs so far.
We will be starting to get the Race of Hope put together because June will be here before we know it.

Congratulations and thank-you for choosing to attend The Cabin Fever 6 hour ROGAINE.

We have planned a fun and very challenging course that includes 21 CP's. Please read the following details and pass it along to your team mates. Watch the blog for any last minute changes.

Suggested travel route...From Chillicothe go south on 23/35....take the 35/50 east split.....exit rt. 50 east....follow 50 to Londonderry....turn left onto rt. 327.....follow 327 to the main entrance to the park. See Google map link.

*MAPS- Each person will be provided a waterproof maps on a 8.5X11 sheet at 1/24,000th scale with premarked CP's. The waterproof maps are capable of being marked on and becomes waterproof as well. The ink may bleed but will not wash off., scorecards are also waterproof. The maps have park trails, roads, streams, most buildings marked. Maps do not have undergrowth, atv trails, logging trails and rock formations marked. A 1km grid is on the map along with magnetic north. Maps will be distributed as you sign in after 8:30am. NO GPS DEVICES!!!!

*Required Gear- Whistle (one per team), compass (one per team), Team bib number (provided by Road ID) fastened on the back of team leader or solo, hydration, food and of course clothing, shoes.........and any other gear needed to stay happy for 6 hours in the woods. BE PREPARED for the worst expected weather. Cells phones are permitted for emergency use but signal is very weak. NO GPS devices allowed!!!

The solo or team leader must have on their person the following items; whistle, compass, bib number fastened on back. Plan on a surprise gear check.

*Schedule- Check-in begins at 8:30 Sat. Maps will be handed out as you check in after 8:30am. Pre race meeting at 9:45am with an immediate start at 10am following the meeting. Each person is required to sign a liability waiver,click here to download (Please print and bring with you.) Race ends promptly at 4pm. You will lose points for being late.

*Course notes- Forest boundaries are marked with yellow blazes. You may utilize trails, roads or bushwhacking if it is on state property. We will have one optional surprise challenge worth 20 extra points. No water drops, but water is available at the park office near the dump station (marked on map). The streams also have water running as well. The lake is dry due to reconstruction.

*Safety- Safety is an extremely high priority. 1. Stay off of private property. 2. Carry plenty of food and water. 3. Help others in need. 4. We will be patrolling the roads , if you need help go to nearest road, and wait. 5. Teams are required to stay together at all times. 6. Everyone is required to checkout when completed with the course. 7. do not cross frozen water (it may not be thick enough).

*Hash House- The Hash House will be open the entire duration of the event. Food and drinks will be available. Hot chili will be awaiting for everyone to enjoy around 3pm.

*Weather Yes this event will go on despite bad weather!! Please be prepared!!!

*Race Rules

1. Good sportsmanship always prevails!! We expect good faith from all participants, this is for fun, not a million dollar prize.

2. Park rules must be followed unless we have a waived rule.

3. DO NOT litter!

4. The team captain or solo is required to display a numbered race bib on their back at all times during the event. The number must be visible at all times. The team captain or solo will be responsible for mandatory gear checks.

5. The team captain or solo may report any other team or solo suspected of a violation to the race official at the finish table within 30 minutes of the event finish time.

6. Any team or solo suspected of misconduct be required to answer questions concerning the possible violation as reported. Violations may result in points deduction, disqualification or banned from participation.

7. When a control becomes misplaced or missing, if the team punches 2 controls surrounding the missing one the team will get credit for the missing one. Must be multiple reports of missing control. We will try to check during event to verify.

8. Teams must travel together (within earshot and visual or about 50 yards) and all members must be able to visually see each control punched. Violating this rule may result in disqualification, loss of points or banned from participation. If a team mate becomes injured or unable to finish, bring them back to the Hash House and at least 2 members may continue the course unranked.

9. Racers are NOT permitted to cross private property. Everyone must stay on public property. Violating this rule may result in disqualification, loss of points or banned from participation. Streams on private property is not public access.

10. No electronic navigation devices. Altimeters are OK. A compass is mandatory.

11. Wireless phones are recommended for emegency use.

12. A safety whistle is mandatory in case you get lost or injured.

13. All racers must check out before leaving the race venue.

14. Scoring will be Rogaine style. First number of checkpoint x 10. (ex. cp#63 = 60 points). Scorecards must be clearly punched in the correct location. Lost scorecards will result in a DNF.

15. Late penalty = loss of highest cp and minus 1 point per minute past race finish time.

16. Race director is always right!!

Problem with lake

The course is set. We discovered one big problem. The map shows water in the lake. The water is all gone......soooo no water in the lake even though the map shows it.

Today is the last day for registrations. We are at 130, record attendance for any event. THANKS!!!

The shirts are in. We will be printing maps, scorecards and such all week. A email will be sent out mid this week with final details, it will also be posted here.

Settin CPs tonight was fun. It was a nice quiet evening. We found these tracks near a CP on a downed tree. Can anyone ID these tracks? Looks like a bobcat, maybe?? Post under comments. We also saw a lot of deer. We will finish setting out CPs this weekend and begin the big task of printing maps. The final email will go out next week after the course is set. Everyone must be experiencing some cabin fever this year since we broke 100 racers registered plus 3 volunteers. You guys rock!! We will begin setting the course next week, pray for good weather!

The t-shirts have been ordered and are in production. Tshirt size is still on the registration page, you will not get a shirt if you registered after the deadline! It is 2 week delivery on the shirts and the order had to be placed on time.

The Road ID race #'s and gift cards are here. We have a dozen of gift cards to give out. Start shopping at Road ID.

The Herr's chips have been ordered. We have hot chili planned and maybe some pasta noodles.

We're back!

We're back! All six of us returned from POCAR with a good finish after 24h 47min finish time. Not bad for a 48 hour event. We ended in 7th place. The other Ohio team caught up and beat us bad! Great job, BWBUCK (not sure team name) finished in 3rd. As we participate in this event you have to keep in mind it is a funraiser and is produced by a college outdoor club. We encountered wrong placement of CP's and wrong UTM's but we kept pushing through to overcome the mental challenge and frustration that creates. I believe this makes us better race directors and better racers. It's the spirit of a friendly and fun competitive event. We also encountered personal injuries and navigation mistakes. These obstacles are what makes it interesting.

Thanks for all the kind words and registrations for Cabin Fever. We are now 100% focused on putting together another great event!!

POCAR and registration for Cabin Fever

We are packed and ready to go to southern Indiana. Leaving Chillicothe at 6am with a race start at noon. Hopefully we will be back by monday morning and sleep. Chuck will be wearing his new Road ID tag, so I think we could just leave his deada** at POCAR and someone will return it. Do ya think?? Thanks for the early registrations that have been pouring in this week. We will get the shirts ordered Tue. after some rest and back to work. The course has been designed and the map is ready. May have to hire a course setter after POCAR. Chili is on the menu and we will be ready to eat!

the perfect shoe?

In our quest to find the perfect shoe we have purchased and used many types and brands, the quest may be over. We will begin product testing today in the snow on our new The North Face Gamble. These shoes are designed for adventure racing and have alot of technology in them. I am very pleased with my other North Face shoes, despite the name they do not appear to be a gamble, I think they are the sure thing! Check these bad boys out.

Don't forget to get a tshirt for The Cabin Fever ROGAINE, get signed up by Jan. 18th. We will be at POCAR that weekend with no communication.

Foot Doctor anyone?? 10 miles in we needed a foot doc, or some new shoe, Oh but they had new shoes. This proved to be the problem, new shoes cause blisters. At this point I wish to give Montrail a two thumbs up, my new Montrails performed awesome, NO blisters for me. Chuck & Todd had to stop for some foot repairs, so we only made a 15 mile hike. POCAR will require 50 miles. We have alot of training in a short time.

We have been busy table (eating) training and a little bit of trail (hiking) training. We are doing POCAR again this year with some extra help. Joe and Bill have joined Todd, Chuck, Jake and Tony to form T.O.A.S.T. (The Ohio Adventure Sports Team).

We have been buying some new toys as well, our new boots are still stiff and need more trail time and less table time. But we did go out Friday night to try my new Princeton Tec headlamp (Apex). Chuck convinced me that I needed more light, I thought he was wrong, but he was right. The new Apex headlamp is awesome!!

If anyone is hiking in southern Ohio during the holidays, give us a shout.

We will be adjusting our rules to deal with a couple of issues. The contact person will be considered team captain. This person will be required to wear a numbered bib on their back and be completely visible at all times. If a team is spotted trespassing on private property or splitting up, the captain of the spotting team should report this to the finish line official within 30 minutes after the conclusion of the event. Include in the report; location, time, team number, # of members spotted violating the rules. Race officials will then meet with the team that potentially violated the rule. A decision will then be made before announcing the results of either point deduction, disqualification or even banned from participation.

Our goal is to continue to produce high quality navigation events. This is a step towards that goal as we continue to grow. We can not be on the entire course the entire time, this step will empower the racers to help us enforce our rules. We intend to strictly enforce NO TRESPASSING or shortcutting through private property (even with permission). Everyone must stay on public property at all times!! NO SPLITTING UP!! Teams must stay together (earshot and visual).

No Solos during 12/24 hour events - Why? Safety!! If one person becomes injured, you have help. It's called the buddy system, I learned this in Boy Scouts. 8, 10, 12 or 24 hours is a long time to wait for help. During Sleepy a highly qualified racer unexpectably took a spill face first into the trail. Luckily it was not severe, but it could have been. (see photo in gallery on results page).

ROGAINE's are traditionally 2, 3, 4 and 5 person teams for a duration of 12 and 24 hours.

12 hours passed with lots of fun, briar scrapes, low on water, no lost souls.......so we're good!! Racers enjoyed Pork BBQ, coleslaw, parsley potatoes, no bake cookies, cake, chips and plenty of drinks. Thanks to Carrie, Christine, Kate, Todd, Billy, Robert, Matt and all of the racers. A special thanks to Ohio State Parks and Forest for allowing us to have this much fun. Full results will be up in a few days. We are picking up controls and unpacking...and some r&r is due.

six hours into Sleepy Hollow and no headless racers yet. Thirsty racers!! We are unable to keep up with 90 thirsty rogainers. We have been filling water drops evry 30 minutes and even increased the amount up to 8 gallons per drop. Glad Walmart is close by.

You ask why am I blogging while the race is in progress. I'm cooking BBQ pork. Yum, Yum.

Last minute map printing

Checkpoint Chuckie last minute printing tonight. We did not relize that it takes 4 minutes to print one map. 4 minutes per map X 95 maps = 380 minutes or 6 hours and 34 minutes. We could have run a rogaine by now. Then add scorecards and other paperwork and $200 in ink and $120 in paper we are about to finish up.

Trucks are packed, CP's are set, maps, scorecards and such are printed, the food is ready to cook.

Sunshine was ordered up and ready. (I think this is our best weather in 2 years, but we will know Sat. morn)

We have about $400 worth of stuff to give away and $1100 worth of t-shirts. Thanks for making this our BIG event. Check out the new website for 2010 with our new schedule. We are now offering 4 ROGAINEs next year.

Congratulations and thank-you for choosing to attend The Sleepy Hollow 50/50 12 hour ROGAINE. We have planned a fun and very challenging course that includes 30 CP's. Please read the following details and pass it along to your team mates. This was emailed to the registration contact only. Watch the blog for any last minute changes.
*MAPS- Each person will be provided a waterproof map on a 13x19 sheet at 1/24,000th scale with pre-marked CP's. The waterproof maps are capable of being marked on and becomes waterproof as well. Maps will be distributed at 9:30am as you check in.

*Required Gear- Whistle (one per team), compass (one per team), one square foot of hunters orange per team, hydration, food and of course clothing, headlamps and extra batteries, shoes.........and any other gear needed to stay happy for 12 hours in the woods. BE PREPARED for the worst expected weather. Cells phones are permitted for emergency use but signal is very weak. NO GPS devices allowed!!!

*Schedule- Check-in begins at 9:30am Sat. Maps will be handed out at check in. Pre race meeting at 10:45am with an immediate start at 11am following the meeting. Course closes at 11pm, any team coming in after that will be penalized. (see scoring) Each person is required to sign a liability waiver, (Please print and bring with you.)

*Course notes- Park boundaries are marked with yellow paint. The park is notorious for briar patches head high, so consider yourself warned. Do not disturb campers, horse riders, hunters, hikers or mountain bikers. Any reports will result in DQ.

*Safety- Safety is an extremely high priority. 1. Stay off of private property. 2. Carry plenty of food and water. 3. Help others in need. 4. We will be patrolling the roads , if you need help go to nearest road, or CP and wait. 5. Teams are required to stay together at all times. 6. Our cell phone numbers are listed on the map, call in an emergency. 7. Each team is required to have one square foot or lrager of hunters orange.

*Scoring- ROGAINE style scoring. (ex. CP63 is worth 60 points.) Penalty for being late is loss of highest CP and minus one point per minute late past 11pm. Score cards must be clearly punched in the correct location to get credit. Scorecards are printed on waterproof paper.

*Hash House- The Hash House will be open the entire duration of the event. Food and drinks will be available. Water is available at the Hash House, both campgrounds and two waterdrops as indicated on the map. We will have a small campfire.

*Weather Yes this event will go on despite bad weather!! Please be prepared!!! Directions to the park

Wow what a weekend! Sure would have been a good one for a rogaine but hey we are NSF and perfect weather doesn't always come our way. If you have been holding out on registering for the Sleepy Hollow Rogaine you are quickly running out of time. We have been watching the weather forecast and the Columbus tv stations are calling for scattered showers and intellicast is just calling for clouds with temps around 60 hey after last years weather that would be a peice of cake. We have started setting the course, the grocery list is ready, the maps are waiting for any last minute changes in the course and I keep waking up in the middle of the night thinking about the event so it must be getting close.
So remember if you are waiting you have about ran out of time to come out and play for 12 hours at Scioto Trail State Park and Forest what could be more fun than that?

OASCR will be a BYOB (boat) event. We will transport your boat to the finish line. We relized some you guys could not carry it that far, maybe next year.

Met with the Forest manager today and he's looking forward to watching all you crazy racers. Be sure to say thanks to all the forest and park employees if you see them.

We will be awarding the top place Railriders and second place gets Gregory Packs. Not sure about third place. Got any ideas......

What: 12 hour adventure race that will include trekking, paddling, mountain biking, navigation and any other crazy stuff we can figure out.
Location: Scioto Trail State Park/Forest, Chillicothe, OH
Schedule: *6am-8:00am Staging and sign-in at the shelter in Scioto Trail SP. Bikes and bike gear will be staged at Longbranch trailhead, boats and paddle gear will be staged at Yocatangee Park boat ramp in Chillicothe

*8am-8:30 meeting handout maps, at the shelter in Scioto Trail State park

* 8:30am shuttle leaves to start line, you will not return to the shelter until the finish.

*9am start north of Chillicothe.

*9pm finish food and awards at the shelter.

UTM plotting is required for all CP locations. UTM tools will be provided.

Course Description: This event will begin in Chillicothe with a short run to locate your boats at Yocatangee Park. Then everyone's off to a 15 mile scenic paddle on The Scioto River. The conclusion of the paddle will take racers into Scioto Trail Forest for a nice trek. After completing the trek racers will enjoy a nice and long peddle on single track and fire roads. There will be two required "O" sections while on the peddle section. Once completed with all that racers will enjoy a short ROGAINE and climb over the Race-COAR cargo net to the finish line. We will place 30 CP's on this 12 hour course for everyone to locate, CP's must be punched in order except for the ROGAINE section. This course is approximately 45 miles depending on route choices.
Cost: $95 each

deadline; Oct. 10, 2009 to get a shirt. If you qualify last minute at The TOAD please email us ASAP. T-shirts will be ordered Monday Morning. Final cutoff is Oct. 20th to give us time to print maps and scorecards and set the course. Scioto Trail will be OFF limits starting Oct. 16th.

Jake found out Sleepy hollow dude out west. I guess the hunt is over. Only checkpoints will be availible this year unless we find a head. But before Sleepy Hollow, let have fun at the first OASCR!!

Be patient about OASCR details, the park has been chosen and the course has been planned. We are still awaiting the final permit. Once we get it, details will be released. You can expect to go big, about 45 miles or so depending on mistakes or shortcuts. Yes, Gamera and Godzilla, you will get wet!!!

We have been working hard on OASCR details since the completion of The Green Corn Moon. We are securing permits and planning the course, once the permits are approved details will be released. It will be a grueling 12 hour event that will challege all that qualified. We are designing some nice long sleeve shirts to commerate the event. We are planning a great catered meal at the end to celebrate. If you qualify and want to race, the entry form is on the OASCR page to download. We hope to make this is a celebration of Ohio adventure racing, not just another race.

Don't want to race, you can be a part of it by volunteering. We need help at the TA's, scoring, moving gear and serving food. Be sure to let us know early so you can get a shirt.

OK, We're back home and settin' CP's, vacation is over. My family vacation was at, near and all around Vegas! Put on about 1400 miles on the rental in 115 degree temps. So I'm jetlagged and settin' CP's with Chuck and Chris today. Good to be home with cooler temps and GREEN grass and trees! The course is lookin' good. Ready for another all nighter to mess with my jetlag.

Well Chuck, you look busy and miserable while I'm out here in 100 degree temps researching areas for a ROGAINE? We found an awesome park that is all red rock, spent several hours hiking and driving through. Wewent back to town, we found this building, I think it melted, or was it intended to look like that?? We are winding down our trip. Just gonna chill out for the next couple of days.

Did I read Tonys post right?? He wrote " hopefully Chuck will have the map ready to print" What does this guy think I do all day? ride my bicycle and motorcycle and lay around the house and act like a teacher with only a few days off left!! Well I have been playing but yes I have been working on the map also. Great Seal was the first map I made from scratch for our race there in April of last year and at the time I thought it was ok but now I look at it and I keep finding more things to do to make it better than before. But it will be ready for print by Tuesday. Remember if you are planning on racing but haven't signed up yet time is running out. We will not be taking any registrations after the Monday the 3rd so dont wait. If you are a weather watcher dont worry about it because chances are it will rain thats the NSF way. Well not every event but sometimes.

Today was alittle shorter in 1am est. Drove several hundred miles through some pretty barron land. Discovered that elevation is the key to cool. In the valleys it is over 100 but at 9000ft it is about 76 and no humidity!! AWESOME!! Looked for some other life forms today but only found a dead horse. You know its bad when you take pics of wild cows.. any guess of my location?? One person has already nailed it, anyone else??

Oh yea, the t-shirts should arrive soon...ahead of schedule. Hopefully Chuck will have maps ready to print when I get home....if I come home, having too much adventure right now.

This is where we ended our journey yesterday. Nice sunset!! We traveled several hundred miles through desert and mountains and didn't get back to our hotel until 2am. But that's ok since the daytime temps have been 117. We got to see some national treasures after dark with no people to clog up the views. We had another big daytrip planned today, but that has now been downsized.

Someone has already figured out my location, right down to my exact hotel. Great detective work from just one pic.

Hey just found a computer and am checking in from my trip out west. Here is a quick overview I will have some pictures after I get home. Landed in Phoenix last Saturday and the temp was 118 degrees. From there we headed to the Grand Canyon and yes it is as awesome as people say. Next stop Zion National Park temp 105 done a couple good hikes tried not to wear myself out early in the trip. Bryce Canyon was next and once again temps around 103. It is just a neat as the others with each park being so different. Drove through Capital Reef and once again WOW. Arches was next and it was just to hot to hike much another day of 105 and I am feeling the engery running out. Stayed in Moab and its everything and more. If you can't find anything to do there then something is wrong. Have made it to Salt Lake City went to the olympic training area for bobsledders and ski jumppers and got to see some freestyle skiers jumping into the pool. About 70-km to clear the course (24 controls possible). Awards to top 3 finishers in male solo, male master solo, senior male solo, female solo, & team divisions. Received this nice card from ACS and wanted to share with everyone. THANKS!!

Also I got to run the Double Down at Dillon by Race-COAR last Sat. WOW!! Good challenging course Todd. Being out of shape doesn't help either. Of course the race began with my weakness, running. Then onto my second weakness, paddling...and a long paddle in a 9' rec boat. But then onto my strengths foot navigation. But Todd had to mix it up a little a and add to the challenge.....navigate using a Google earth image with CP placements. Well at this point I met up with Kathy Jo and we are both trying to figure out how to attack. So we decided to travel together, thanks Kathy Jo we did well. Hit every CP right on. After completing the trek O I paddled back to move onto and strong discipline, biking.

Has anyone ever walked on water?? Well I discovered that feeling after running onto a very shallow area in the middle of the lake, dragging a boat in the middle of a big lake??

After hitting all Cp's but 19, I was done. Then I seen my score, dang it, I forgot to get CP15. OH well. It was fun and what a workout.

Be sure to get signed up for CGCM ROGAINE by July 20th to get your t-shirt!!

We have mailed in $300 to The American Cancer Society and presented the $300 check to The Friends of Lake Hope. Again, we thank everyone for participating and giving. All the hard work is worth it when we get results and great comments of appreciation from all of you. The charities are especially gratefully during the hard times we are going through.

Reminder that the Green Corn Moon ROGAINE deadline is July 20th if you want a t-shirt and August 3rd is the last day to register. This is the first night ROGAINE to be held at Great Seal State Park, should be FUN!!

Well, if you believe that history repeats itself, it appears that it does. One year ago we had the same weather forecast. It rained the night before the race and then we had a great race. So the race goes on!! here is a link to a weather forecast. It looks like most of this storm will be north of us but will get wet tonight.

We are leaving to set out the course and set up camp. We will not be available to answer questions today. So we will see at the race.

A couple of good questions have came up.

Staging? If you are NOT camping, I would suggest that you stage your gear first before coming to the start/finish-camp for check-in. It is a few miles on a gravel road and it would be best to make as few trips as possible.

If everything goes well, we plan on bringing your boats and gear back to the camp while you are racing. So be sure to keep all your gear together during transitions to avoid getting it lost or just misplaced.

Running while boating? There will be NO running during the paddle this year. Running will be before and after.

Parking... There is plenty of parking at the camp IF we keep organized. DO NOT block the road, you may park along the road if needed.

Thank you for attending the Race of Hope 09. We have a great weekend planned. Please read through the following info and share with your team mates.

We will be at Lake Hope all day Friday setting the course. Racers are welcome to come to the primitive group camp after 5pm.
Signs will be posted.
Do not be exploring the forest or trails on Friday. Stay on the roads or risk DQ!!
This event will go on rain or shine. BE PREPARED!!!

Schedule; Staging- 7:30-8:30 am MAP to staging areas

Boats, PFD's and paddles should be staged with the volunteer at the SW corner of the beach. If you are renting boats from the park, you should be there at 8am. Once rentals are finished you should check your boat back in before leaving the beach.

Bikes and all biking gear should be staged with the volunteer at The Furnace.

We will have five disciplines including (not in order) running, paddling, biking, trek "O", and a ROGAINE finish. Once you leave the start line you will NOT return until the ROGAINE finish, take or stage all gear that you will need for the first 4 disciplines.

Sign-in 7:00-8:45 am Each person needs to bring two copies of a correctly filled out waiver with you.

Awards and food 5:30 pm

Chalahgawtha Green Corn Moon ROGAINE registration is now open. We are really excited about getting into Great Seal in the dark (full moon hopefully). If you have not been there GO! It is a neat little park that sits on the North end of Chillicothe. On the backside is the Tecumseh drama. You could attend the drama, once it is over do the ROGAINE. That would be a great night of entertainment.

We are finishing up the details (rules, scorecards buying goodies to give out, planning for the best part FOOD!) for the RoH. Be sure to bring a few bucks cash to help out our charities. We are planning a split the pot. $1 per ticket or $5 for 7 tickets. The winner gets half and our charities get the other half. So far we will be giving about $250 to The American Cancer Society and Friends of Lake Hope. Keep registering and we'll keep giving!!

Friday night at the campsite, bring your favorite marshmellow stick and some firewood and we'll all hangout and tell some stories. Maybe we can convince the All-terrain females in some songs??? or maybe not...
